Accurate conversion tracking: pixel, Conversions API and GA4 in plain language
Why is the pixel alone no longer enough?
Browsers, privacy settings and ad blockers stop part of your events from reaching the platforms. The result: real sales that are never credited to the ad, and algorithms learning from incomplete data. That's why sending events from your server as well has become standard practice, whatever happens to third-party cookies.
The three components
| Component | What it does | Why you need it |
|---|---|---|
| Pixel (browser) | Sends events from the visitor's device | Fast and easy to install |
| Conversions API (server) | Sends the same events from your server | Recovers what the browser loses |
| GA4 | Analyses the whole journey across channels | Sees the picture independently of each platform |
Which events should you track?
- Viewing a product or service
- Adding to cart or starting a booking
- Starting checkout
- Purchase or form submission
- Tapping WhatsApp or call buttons
Preventing duplicates
When the pixel and the server send the same event, both must carry the same "event ID" so the platform counts it once. This is the most common technical mistake we find in the accounts we audit.
A pre-launch checklist
- Make a test purchase or form submission yourself.
- Confirm the event appears in the platform's event testing tool.
- Check the event isn't duplicated.
- Verify the value and currency are correct.
- Confirm the conversion and its source appear in GA4.
The bottom line
Tracking isn't a technical detail; it is the basis of every ad decision. Three layers working together, a clear event list and a test before every launch — only then do your campaign numbers tell the truth.
Questions
Do I need a developer to set up the Conversions API?
Ready-made store platforms often have direct integrations; custom sites need a developer.
Is GA4 enough instead of platform tracking?
No — each platform needs its own events to optimise its campaigns; GA4 is for the overall analysis.
How do I know tracking works?
Run a complete test transaction and follow it in each platform's testing tools.
